How to Test Your Car's Battery

If you suspect your vehicle's battery is going bad, you'll want to test it. The best way to determine whether a battery is fully charged is to use a voltmeter. A voltmeter will measure your battery's charge. Voltmeters can be analog or digital with digital being the most accurate.

When you're ready to test your vehicle's battery, you need to make sure the vehicle and all lights are off. Locate the battery's positive terminal. Connect the red (positive) lead to the positive terminal. Next, connect the black (negative) lead to the negative battery terminal. Consult the voltmeter's chart and compare test results to determine how charged your car's battery is.
