How to Change a Flat Tire in Waldorf, MD
Hearing the thumping of a deflating tire is enough to instill a sense of annoyance and dread in any driver in Waldorf. However, that doesn’t have to be the case if you are prepared to change a flat tire. Our Service Department team members at Sheehy Hyundai of Waldorf have made this guide, so you’re ready to remove the damaged wheel, add a new one, and continue driving.
Stocking the Gear Required
The first step to changing a flat tire is preparation, and that involves making sure you have both the knowledge and tools to do the job. Regarding the latter, it all starts with having a spare that is properly inflated and in good condition. You need to check that part at least once a month to ensure it’s ready. Aside from that, you’ll want to have a jack, a lug wrench, the Owner’s Manual to your car, and a tire gauge if you do not have a Tire Pressure Monitoring System in your Hyundai KONA, TUCSON, or SONATA. You may want to bring a portable tire inflator to add some pressure to the spare, and it’s always a good idea to have wheel wedges and a high-visibility vest so other drivers can see you.
Begin the Process
If you find that you’re not equipped to handle this project, either mentally or physically, then it’s a good idea to get your vehicle towed to our dealership location. We have a team of professionals with all the instruments and knowledge needed to complete the task quickly and easily. They can also evaluate whether or not you need a new tire or whether the old one can be safely repaired. If you’re ready to do this on your own, then you first need to pull off of Crain Highway and find a safe place to make the swap. Remove your tire changing kit from its stowing area and use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts by half a turn. Then, using the Owner’s Manual, place the car jack. Lift the vehicle several inches off the ground, unfasten the lug nuts the rest of the way, and remove the damaged tire.
Finish Changing the Flat Tire
Inspect the spare and check that it’s correctly inflated. Then, ensuring that the correct side is facing outward, slide it on the lug bolts until it cannot go any further. Tighten the lug nuts using just your hand for several turns. Use your car jack to partially lower the Hyundai vehicle back to the ground so that it’s only lightly resting on the surface. Next, take your lug wrench and secure the lug nuts in a pattern that is star-shaped, skipping over every other one until they’re all very tight. Bring the car the rest of the way to the ground, give the lug nuts another turn if you can, and then continue on your way to Pinefield Community Park. Once there, schedule a service appointment to have your flat tire examined or to have a new set applied to your Hyundai model, restoring your sense of confidence in your vehicle.
How Far Can I Drive on a Spare Tire?
- If you have a small spare, often called a donut, do not drive more than 50 miles and keep your speed under 50 MPH if it’s safe to do so.

Very good experience! Eric was very helpful and made the experience pleasant.
“ Very good experience! Eric was very helpful and made the experience pleasant. I am usually leery and very skeptical of car dealers. He was neither pushy nor aggressive and that was appreciated in addition to him and the finance manager going above and beyond to get what I was asking for. I will definitely go back when in the market for another vehicle. ”
